Tutorial for Hobby Horse Candy Cane Christmas Ornament

These little guys have been on my Christmas tree for as long as I can remember. My grandma made them for us kids when we were young. I added these hobby horse candy holders tutorial to my blog many years ago and they have been the number one favorite for many of you. Since then, I’ve updated them a bit. I found this fringe and I love how it represents the mane so much more realistic. I also added the buttons replacing the pom-poms.
Supplies needed to make 2 ornaments:
(1) (9 x 12 in) felt square
(2) 6 inches of decorative trim for the mane
(4) 10 mm size wiggle eyes
(2) 12" pieces of decorative flat braid or ribbon
(4) 1/2" pom poms or buttons
(2) candy canes
Heavy thread or ribbon for hanging
Glue gun or a thick tacky craft glue
Scissors & pins
Printable pattern
Instructions:
1.Print out the page that has the horse pattern pieces. Make sure that the pattern prints out at 100% or ACTUAL SIZE. You’ll see a three inch line. You can use that as a guide to make sure your pattern is printing at the proper size.
2. Fold your felt in half length wise and you’ll be able to get two ornaments. Pin the pattern pieces to the felt and cut out.
3. On one of the horse pieces, run a bead of glue down the back from the bottom of the ear to the bottom of the horse. Place the decorative trim along this edge. If using rack be sure the "points" extend along the outer edge. Do this on one of the other horse pieces.
4. Now run a bead of glue around the entire outer edges of horse leaving the bottom completely open. Lay other felt piece on top and press outer edges together. Do this for each horse.
5. Glue decorative flat braid or ribbon to horse as shown in photo. I find that is easiest to leave a little extending at the beginning to trim off later. Flip and repeat on the other side. Repeat on other horse.
6. Glue pom-pom or button, and wiggle eyes to horse as show in photo. Repeat on other side, and with the other horse. Slip a ribbon or heavy thread through the ribbon braiding at the horse's ear. Slip in a candy cane and enjoy!
